John 5:44

NASB: How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

NIV: How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God.

The issue here concerns the last part of the verse "the one God." The main reason there is a question here is that the KJV mistranslates the last part of this verse as "…from God only" instead of "form the only God." The Greek text says, "tou monou theou" which literally is "the only God." The word monou (only) is an attribute adjective describing theou (god). As such this is to be translated the "the only God." There is no justification for the KJV translation, and it is unclear why they translated the passage as they did.
